What Is Juvenile Batten Disease?
Juvenile Batten Disease is a devastating, inherited disorder of the nervous system that affects 2-4 out of every 100,000 births in the U.S. This rare disorder usually presents early symptoms between 5 and 10 years of age, when a previously normal child begins to develop seizures or vision problems. As it progresses, the child is left blind, bedridden, and physically and mentally incapacitated, requiring 24-hour care. Batten Disease is fatally, usually by the late teens or early twenties. There are no current treatments or known cure, but there is HOPE.
The Beyond Batten Disease Foundation and the Will Herndon Fund for Juvenile Batten Research are currently funding a group of Italian research scientists at Texas Children's Hospital. They are working on developing a potential treatment for Batten Disease. We need your help to continue to support the privately funded researchers dedicated to fighting this disease. So many childhood diseases that were once grave sentences are now treatable, thanks to researchers, doctors, and the people who donated to further their work. Let's make Juvenile Batten Disease one more treatable illness, saving the hundreds of children out there suffering from it.
